Twentyeight Health Named to Fast Company’s Annual List of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2022

NEW YORK, March 8, 2022 — Twentyeight Health, a telehealth company increasing access to sexual and reproductive care, has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2022.

This year’s list honors businesses that are making the biggest impact on their industries and culture as a whole — ultimately thriving in today’s ever-changing world. These companies are creating the future today with some of the most inspiring accomplishments of the 21st century.

“There is an incredible need for increased access to birth control in the United States — more than 19 million women of reproductive age living in contraceptive deserts, and low-income women are three times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than women in higher income brackets,” said Amy Fan, co-founder of Twentyeight Health. “Twentyeight Health is fighting for birth control equity, ensuring that all women living in America, particularly BIPOC women and women from low-income backgrounds, can access high quality, dignified and convenient birth control prescription and delivery services.”

Fast Company recognized Twentyeight Health for the company’s innovations in increasing access to birth control via telehealth for women from underserved communities. Twentyeight Health takes a user-centric approach to building their platform, gathering continuous feedback from their users. The company leverages multiple modes of telehealth, including audio consultations and direct messaging with physicians, to provide privacy, discretion and a seamless experience regardless of the individual’s access to high-speed internet or housing situation. Twentyeight Health provides ongoing care at no extra cost through unlimited doctor follow up messages to discuss issues such as updating prescriptions or addressing potential side effects.

In addition to creating a technology platform that serves everyone, Twentyeight Health has pursued a number of other initiatives focused on increasing access to birth control, including:

  • Medicaid acceptance: Today, one in three doctors in the US are not accepting new Medicaid patients. Twentyeight Health accepts Medicaid in many of the states it’s available, including Georgia, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas.
  • Spanish language services: Even though Spanish is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the U.S., with more than 40 million U.S. residents speaking Spanish at home, a Health Affairs study published in 2021 shows that Spanish speakers receive approximately one-third less care than other Americans. In 2021, Twentyeight Health launched a Spanish language website, customer support in Spanish, and doctor telehealth visits and ongoing care in Spanish.
  • Culturally competent physicians: A 2021 study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine details that the people who use telehealth in the greatest numbers are affluent Americans living in urban areas. In order to ensure that everyone feels comfortable using Twentyeight Health’s telehealth services, the company works with physicians who have experience providing care to low-income patients and in communities of color.
  • Charitable giving: Twentyeight Health has infused charitable giving into its business model, providing free birth control for uninsured women in financial need through a partnerships with Bedsider’s Contraceptive Access Fund, and donating 2% of revenues to Bedsider and the National Institute for Reproductive Health.

“As a digital health company focused on reaching women from underserved communities, we knew from day one that we had to do more than offer affordable telehealth services,” said Bruno Van Tuykom, co-founder of Twentyeight Health. “When we look at our company as a whole — from the experience of using our platform, to the languages our doctors communicate in, and our approach to partnering with nonprofits — we make sure that everything we do is truly focused on increasing access to affordable, inclusive, and high quality care.”

Fast Company’s editors and writers sought out the most groundbreaking businesses across the globe and industries. They also judged nominations received through their application process.

“The world’s most innovative companies play an essential role in addressing the most pressing issues facing society, whether they’re fighting climate change by spurring decarbonization efforts, ameliorating the strain on supply chains, or helping us reconnect with one another over shared passions,” said Fast Company Deputy Editor David Lidsky.

For the second year in a row, to coincide with the issue launch, Fast Company will host its Most Innovative Companies Summit on April 26–27. The virtual, multiday summit celebrates the Most Innovative Companies in business, and provides an early look at major business trends and an inside look at what it takes to innovate in 2022. Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue (March/April 2022) is available online here, as well as in-app form via iTunes, and on newsstands beginning March 15. The hashtag is #FCMostInnovative.
